Brussels is the capital of Belgium, the French Community of Belgium, the Flemish Community and the main seat of the European Union's institutions. Lying at the crossroads of cultures (the Germanic in the north and the Romanic in the South) and playing an important role in Europe Brussels fits the definition of the archetypal "melting pot", but nonetheless retains its own unique character. Brussels operates as a bilingual city where both French and Dutch are official languages. Thus all the streets have two names, which can sound totally different.
The Grand-Place is Brussels' top tourist attraction justified by the Gothic magnificence of the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) and the Baroque exuberance of the late seventeenth-century guild houses surrounding the square. It is surrounded by the city tower and a range of beautiful 300 year old buildings. Some evenings a music and light show is provided with the buildings serving as a canvas.
One should also visits the Manneken Pis (and Jeanneke Pis): a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a little boy urinating into the fountain's basin. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium combine four interconnected sections of old masters and modern art collections. Together they make up Belgium's most complete collection of fine art with works by, amongst many, Pieter Bruegel, Rubens, Delvaux and Magritte. Definitely check out the Arc de Triomphe-Triomfboog on the east side of town. It's in the Parc du Cinquantenaire-Jubelpark. It is possible to go up to the terrasse above the arch, from where you'll have a good view of the city (free entrance).
Brussels is famous for being home to many Belgian comics characters, including The Smurfs, Largo Winch, Tintin and Lucky Luke to name but a few. Throughout Brussels, (also nicknamed Comic city) there are many murals and frescos celebrating the city's many cartoon heroes.
