Welcome to Suzhou

Suzhou is a 2, 500-year-old city city on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and on the shores of Lake Taihu in the province of Jiangsu, China. It has been named as one of China's top 24 historical and cultural cities and is only one of the four tourist cities with environmental protection (the other three being Beijing, Hangzhou and Guilin). The city is renowned for its beautiful stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed gardens which have contributed to its status as a great tourist attraction. Many of the famous private gardens were constructed by the gentry of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Classical gardens in Suzhou were added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997 and 2000. One should visit the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden and the Panmen Gate. The traditional performing arts of Suzhou are best represented by the Kunqu Opera, Suzhou Opera and Ballad singing, reputed both in China and overseas for their minute acting and harmonic melody.

Apart from the ancient architecture and folklore, the fine elements of Suzhou's art and culture can best be seen in the various museums, notably, the Municipal Museum, the Theatrical Museum, the Museum of Folklore, the Museum of Engraved Stone Tablets, the Museum of Suzhou Embroidery Art, and the Silk Museum. Endowed with abundant native produce, the rich and exquisite Suzhou cuisine sets a style of its own on this "land of plenty". Tongli is an aged town located a short drive from Suzhou, which is about a hour drive outside of Shanghai. Tongli is over 1000 years old and has only recently been changed into a tourist attraction. The town is characterized by stone bridges and well preserved ancient architecture including private gardens, temples and houses.
