Antigua Guatemala is a city in the central mountains of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish New World Baroque architecture as well as a number of spectacular ruined churches. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Antigua has an incredible number of ruined and restored colonial buildings , and although these constitute only a fraction of the city's original splendour, they do give an idea of its former extravagance
Central Park is the heart of the city. The reconstructed fountain in particular is very beautiful. People enjoy this park from early in the morning to late at night. Nowadays, Antigua is noted for its very elaborate religious celebrations for the Holy Week leading up to Easter. Each Sunday in Lent, one on the local parishes sponsor a Procession through the streets of Antigua.
Tourists come to see all that Antigua has to offer, including nightlife, bars, restaurants, markets selling Mayan goods, and excursions via shuttles to surrounding sites. These sites include the Church and Convent of Capuchins, the ruins of old San José, the museum of Santo Domingo and the Jade museum.
Three large volcanoes dominate the horizon around Antigua; Volcán de Agua or "Volcano of Water", Acatenango and Volcán de Fuego or "Volcano of Fire".
