Welcome to Killarney

Killarney is a town in County Kerry, southwestern Ireland. The town is in a deep valley in the MacGillicuddy Reeks, beside the Lakes of Killarney and part of the Killarney National Park. It is home to St. Mary's Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey, torc waterfall and Innisfallen Island, the location of a ruined monastery. It is a sister city of Concord, North Carolina.
Thanks to its history, natural interest and proximity to the Dingle Peninsula, Skellig Michael island and its location on the Ring of Kerry, Killarney is a popular tourist destination.

Tourism

Tourism is by far the largest industry in Killarney. With the exception of Ireland's capital city, Dublin, there are more hotel beds available in Killarney than in any other Irish town or city.

Attractions

Lakes of Killarney, Killarney National Park, Muckross House, The Black Valley,
ROSS CASTLE: This square medieval tower which was built by the O' Donoghues in the 15th century is beautifully situated on the shores of Lough Lein. Now restored, the castle houses a fine collection of 16th and 17th century oak furniture.
Ross Castle is also the departure point for boat tours on Lough Lein.

Nightlife

Killarney is a popular destination for partygoers. It is seen by many people in Ireland as the best town in the country to go for a weekend. Killarney's nightspots are often busy 7 days a week during the summer months when the population of the town and the surrounding area increases supposedly 4 fold. The most common places visited are Mustang Sallys, McSorelys, Scruffys, Brother McCuddas, Charlie Foleys and the Grand Hotel which is particularly popular with American tourists during the summer.

Rally Of The Lakes

Every year the town is host to the rally of the lakes which takes place in the first weekend of May. Many of the local people despise this event and don't look kindly on the type of people drawn to the event. Many feel that the damage caused by the followers of the rally outweigh the revenue they bring in(Which goes primarily to those unaffected by the punters). Publicans often face difficulty in controlling the people in the bars and when these punters are ejected they usually swarm around the publicans in a threatening manner. The popular view is "they are "mocks"... coming down in their souped up cars taking over the place and destroying everything". Numerous arrests are commonplace during the weekend and for many local revellers, it is not uncommon for them to avoid the town altogether during the weekend. Rather than discouraging the "boy racer" epidemic sweeping most towns, it is viewed that this festival and display of modified cars only encourages and encapsulates the boy racer clique.
